History of Turmeric:

Turmeric is an ancient spice with a history going back more than 4,000 years and a distinct, golden color.  It comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant which is part of the ginger family. Turmeric has long been recognized as having remarkable health benefits. It has anti-inflammatory properties and it has been shown to protect healthy cells from cancer causing agents. Turmeric helps to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease, and as a cooking spice it is delicious. Turmeric is the main ingredient in curry, which is used in many Indian dishes. Curry powder came to the west as a result of British colonization of India and through trade with the British East India Trading Company. The first appearance of curry in English was in 1747 in the cookbook “The art of Cooking Made Plain and Easy” Turmeric today is available in a wide variety of spiciness and style, and is recognized as a super spice for its health benefits.
