Who is Eligible to Enroll?

All children, living in Coffey County, who have not yet entered kindergarten are eligible. This usually means ages birth through 5.

Why Read 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?

Children get ready to read long before they begin school. Their early experiences with books and language lay the foundation for future reading success. Experts identify six important pre-reading skills necessary to best prepare a child for reading development prior to age six. When parents read to their child they are helping them to learn these skills and are encouraging them to be an avid reader.

What Books Count?

All books your child has read or listened to may be logged, whether from the library or home. Books may be logged if they were read by parents, librarians, daycare providers, and older siblings. The same book may be logged as many times as you read it.

How Long Does It Take to Read 1,000 Books?

1 book per day for 3 years = 1,000 books
10 books per week for 2 years = 1,040 books
3 books per day for 1 year = 1,095 books

What is the Dolly Parton Imagination Library?

It sounds too simple to be true, but by reading regularly with your children during their preschool years, you are giving them the biggest boost toward a successful education they will ever get.

Research has shown that children who have access to books and are read to are better prepared for kindergarten, have improved third grade reading test scores, and are more likely to graduate on time from high school. Together, we can give your child the opportunity they deserve for a successful life!

Each month, a new, carefully-selected book will be mailed directly to your home for your child, who can look forward to new and exciting reading adventures from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library until turning five-years-old as long as you remain a resident of Coffey, Lyon, Morris and Osage counties. Should your child move outside the service area, he/she automatically exits the program. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a FREE GIFT to our children thanks to the organizations listed above!

Coffey County Special Education Cooperative

The Coffey County Special Education Cooperative (CCSEC) serves eleven schools across three school districts in east central Kansas. K-State Extension Office – Coffey County

All universities engage in research and teaching, but the nation’s more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities have a third critical mission- Extension. Extension “reaches out,” extending resources and addressing public needs with university resources through non-formal, non-credit programs. Programs are largely administered through County Extension offices that bring land-grant university expertise to the local level.

Parents as Teachers is a free, research-based program designed to provide practical, timely information to all families with young children including single parents, first-time parents and expectant parents.
