Inspired by The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells, Moreno-Garcia took the original story and made it sprawling and beautiful. Where Wells’s story is a short, sharp horror, this is a fully fleshed-out character study. The Doctor is cruel, yet he has a heart. The mayordomo is an alcoholic, but he is also a romantic. The hybrids are docile, but so loyal as to be willing to fight fiercely, with teeth, for the lives of their loved ones. And the Daughter…well I think you ought to read it for yourself if you’d like to meet her. There’s real history mixed in, and a beautiful setting that expands Wells’s Island from an isolated floating rock, to a place in the world, remote but not untouched by the troubles of the world. Fans of Wells will find many allusions to the original, but this book can and should be enjoyed by all gothic/horror/scifi lovers.
